The nucleus of the Deiter program is the partnership of brothers Doug & Roger Deiter and their wives Sandy & Beth. Doug & Sandy's son Kevin and his wife Carrie joined the operation full time in 1999.

When Doug & Roger Deiter decided to develop a seed stock operation over twenty years ago, family traditions demanded that it be built on long-range solutions to complicated problems facing the beef industry. They would have to offer quality-breeding cattle that would be capable of generating profits for their commercial customers in a variety of trait areas. They also wanted to offer a program and services to assist customers market their product, quality feeder & fed cattle.

With this in mind, the Deiters began to pursue a breed or breeds to become involved with. The various traditional “Pure Breeds” offered answers for their particular area of excellence. None however, offered the multi-purpose solutions Deiters were seeking. Setting breed politics and tradition aside, a blend of Continental and British genetics seemed the right solution. The Angus composite idea made sense and the combination of Chianina and Angus offered the most right answers. Angus contributes the black, polled factor and the strong maternal & production traits that have made the breed famous. The Chianina, influence provided the hybrid dimension for more muscle, feedlot performance and lean growth. An added bonus that hybrid vigor brings, is cow longevity, increased fertility and udder quality in the females with a composite breeding program.

In 2001, we felt that our program had developed to a point where we would be well served by developing a second Hybrid line of genetics which would enable us to offer our existing customer base another option and hopefully allow our network of genetics and customer services to swing a bigger loop and attract even more customers.  We chose SimAngus as that second Hybrid line as we felt they very well complimented our existing ChiAngus blend.  The SimAngus Hybrid cattle have proven to very worthy and we continue to feel very good about our decision.  A ChiAngus bull on a SimAngus cow or vice versa is proving to be a very dynamic breeding program.  It enables our commercial producers to more efficiently utilize the benefits of heterosis with out experiencing the huge swings in phenotype that have plagued other cross breeding programs for years.  “Simple Solutions to Complicated Crossbreeding Alternatives”.  In 2003 another opportunity presented itself to incorporate a herd of Purebred Angus to our program and it seemed to be the next logical step for us and would further solidify Deiter Brothers as a one-stop-shop for common sense practical and dependable genetics.  The first Angus bulls were offered in the 2004 Cream of the Crop Bull Sale.

Today, the Deiter Bros. operation encompasses roughly 16,000 acres of range and cropland in Faulk County , South Dakota .  Kevin represents the fourth generation of the Deiter family to face the challenges of production agriculture on the northern plains.  The headquarters ranch includes approximately 10,000 acres of crop land with the remaining dedicated to grassland and hay production.  A combination of the Deiter nucleus herd along with other subsequently developed satellite herds now total approximately 2,000 cows.  The genetic plan also includes approximately 200 embryo transplant calves produced annually.

The Deiter Bros. cowherd is made up of registered ChiAngus, SimAngus and Angus cows and bred heifers. Approximately 750 cows and bred heifers are at home on the main ranch. Another 1,000 cows & bred heifers are maintained in four cooperator herds in North & South Dakota. Another 150 embryo transplant calves are produced contractually each year.
